My looonnnngggtime girlfriend, Kelly, chose to celebrate her milestone 40th birthday with a little weekend staycation in Fort Worth. In case you don’t know, my little tribe is all from Dallas and its Northern ‘burbs.
When I lived in Watauga (a suburb of Fort Worth) after I got married, no one came to visit me. Ever. I lived there for almost five years (here’s our old house). Not bitter about that at all… ha!! Actually, two of my cousins did come out for one of my parties and ended up having a blast. So as much as I love Big D, I made the best of living near Fort Worth and the Downtown/University area is really cool. Visiting again was fine by me.
I decided to join them for the festivities this past Saturday. I mean, 40 is a big deal even when you don’t look a day over 27 like my dear friend (there maybe jealousy in that statement but I still love her)! Here is a breakdown of her plans, my plans and how the fun time went down.
Get it goin’
She invited a group of her favorite friends to join her and her husband for a weekend in what we locals fondly refer to as “Funky Town” Fort Worth. They decided on The Omni Hotel. She sent over hotel recommendations in the downtown area in case anyone wanted to stay and not have to drive home. Fort Worth is about an hour away from where I live so I definitely wanted to stay the night, as I knew dranks would be involved.
I have little ones and no baby sitter other than my husband who is really anti-social, which is good for me because I get to do things like this. But I wasn’t going to stay away for 2 nights although after checking in with K, she and her man had a great time Friday night. They checked in and had dinner and drinks. She is a mom of 3 and so when she got to sleep in on Saturday morning, I know that was one of her favorite gifts! They had breakfast in bed and a lovely afternoon couples massage and had a relaxing day, just like a typical vacation.
When I finally decided to join the fun on Saturday, I chose to stay at the new Fairfield Inn and Suites Fort Worth Downtown (a Marriott property). It is 2 blocks away from the Omni and a great price (especially since I used my points). It was a cute little spot. Read my review of the property here.
Lames finally used Uber
K’s friend came in to celebrate as well and left her husband at home so she was my roomie and I consider her a friend as well! We checked in to the hotel around 6 pm, freshened up, headed down to the bar for a drink, and then called an Uber to take us to dinner. It was our first time Uberring as we both confessed we never go anywhere. Man, it was easy.
Dinner was at Cork and Pig in the West 7th District and was so good. There was a total of 6 of us which was the perfect size group, IMO. Of course, I have a review right here for you to read! I love the area too. Lots of shopping and restaurants. It’s a must visit if you’re in Fort Worth.
After dinner, we headed near Sundance Square to find a jazz spot called Scat. It is an underground lounge that you access from an alley – completely safe but also super sexy and cool! It was standing room only which is no bueno but it was a lot of fun. I would recommend it for a different scene than the normal club music.
After the party its the hotel lobby
When we had enough standing, we decided to just head back to K’s hotel for a night cap. I have always wanted to be the type of person who says “night cap”. Finally. #goals. The Omni is nice. It’s a large property with a hoppin’ bar. I would 100% stay there if I’m in downtown FT. Worth again. We chilled out for a bit and mostly laughed (I love my friends) before heading back to our hotel. K was like 5 sheets to the wind so it was time to call it a night!
My roomie and I slept in for a bit and I had the free breakfast, which was pretty good. Hotels these days make it so easy to check-in and out that I really enjoy travelling, even if only an hour away. I was home by noon and Dax and the hubs were all smiles to see me. Briggs was napping and I don’t think he realized I was ever gone.
I’m so glad K decided to do a little something different for her b-day. It was an easy getaway and I loved celebrating with her and having a bit of staycation for myself!
Tips for planning an easy fun staycation for a celebration:
- Blast your friends via text with a couple of dates/weekends to see when they are available. Majority rules so go with the date most people can make it.
- Give them plenty of advanced notice. At least 4 weeks if not a bit more. Schedules fill up quickly and it is so hard to get people together these days.
- Always give hotel and area options. If people don’t mind driving or Uberring, they don’t necessarily have to stay close even though it makes it more fun, but still, options.
- If you can send people an itinerary in advance, it helps them plan for budget, attire, etc.
- Don’t take it personal if people can’t make it. This is a hard one for me (Leo issues) but not everyone has the time or money to get away.
- Absolutely the most important tip, relax and have fun!
I hope you enjoyed reading about the fun weekend. Thanks so much!!
