The popularity of the concept of Hygge continues to grow. If you haven’t heard of it or don’t know about it, first of all, “where you been at”?? Ha! Secondly, according to Wikipedia, “Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment.” Well, if that doesn’t fit in my front pocket, I don’t know what does. Also, if you’re curious, it’s pronounced “hoo-ga” with an emphasis on the “hoo”. I’m trying to manifest the complete mood of Hygge at home this Christmas. Here’s how I’m doing it with some tips and lots of pieces you can shop for your home!

Blankets Everywhere!
Cozy, plush blankets are a must for creating Hygge moments in your home. I can never, NEVER have too many blankets. I mean it. Never too many. Eight to a room seems plenty. Ok, that’s too many but I do love a good blanket. A monogrammed one doesn’t hurt either. Bonus points for bringing out Christmassy blankets for the season.
Baked Goods, Pastries, & Comfort Food
Leave it to food to fill you with a satisfying sense of nostalgia and security. Whether it be the warm smell of baking croissants or an apple pie, or the umami smell of mushroom soup or beef stew, you’ll surely decompress with your olfactory nerve engaged by loving food aromas and tasty bites. See here for a link to a great Apple Crumb Pie I made recently and will make again for Thanksgiving!
Candles & Oil Diffusers
I love candles as long as they are of good quality. I have allergies so a smoky candle is not going to work. But the wafting scent of sage and vetiver filling the air gives me all the chill vibes. Plus there’s nothing like that little flame to set a mood.
If you’re into essential oils and aromatherapy (I love them), a diffuser is an amazing aromatherapy tool. I love this one with the fluted cloche like cover.
A Nice Drink
Be it a cocktail (like the Butterscotch Old Fashioned I have pictured), a cup of tea, or hot cocoa, having a drink that warms your bones really sets the mood for mental relaxation and comfort.
Light the Fire
Even in warmer clients, relaxing by a fire creates an atmosphere that only relaxing by the fire can, lol!
Books
I know a ton of folks read digitally or audibly, but I tell you what, I love real books. Turning actual pages while sitting in a comfy spot, leaving the real world behind? Yes, please.
Less Tech!
Well, this should be self explanatory. Be present for yourself, for your family, and friends! This is part of the Hygge Manifesto which is included in The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking. Its tenets are as follows:
- 1} Atmosphere
- 2} Presence
- 3} Pleasure
- 4} Equality
- 5} Gratitude
- 6} Harmony
- 7} Comfort
- 8} Truce
- 9} Togetherness
- 10} Shelter
You see, with a little thought and conscientiousness about your time, space, and overall life, you can achieve Hygge. Make sure that you find time for cozy comfort this winter especially after working that stressful 9-5 or dealing with kids while working from home, or dealing with the grueling process of looking for work during a pandemic! Make time for yourself and your loved ones amidst the stress and chaos of decorating for the holidays and Christmas shopping. It will actually help you deal with it.
Below you can find some more wonderful items that will help you create a sense of Hygge in your home this Christmas.
I hope you found some inspiration or that you were at least enlightened on Hygge. Hopefully you’ll have yourself a cozy little Hygge Christmas this year!
